this is amazing!! love love love Olivia so any work on her music is always something I'll appreciate, and I think this is a great analysis of one of her best songs
Thank you for the kind words!! I agree this is one of her best songs. I can't wait to see what Olivia comes out with next, fingers crossed we'll get OR3 soon lol
I had never heard of the cool girl monologue, but I looked it up and read it, and I can definitely see the similarities! Glad to have taught you something new about the 'light as a feather, stiff as a board' lyric, it was a fun party trick I remember doing at sleepovers ahaha
Love. I find this song interesting also given that she is a POC and of mixed race, so she's kind of surrounded by this whiteness in her industry, and I guess in her life, and I think the specific way this song includes a lot of imagery of white American femininity is an added layer of her song writing, and the way she sees herself as an outsider and that the standards she writes about the song are inherently unattainable because they are for white women. Also I think I read/saw somewhere that the 'All American Bitch' line comes from something she read by Joan Didion!
Yes definitely! It adds another layer to the song, for sure, and that's part of why I found her quote about wanting to be the "perfect American girl" so interesting. That's very interesting about the Joan Didion reference too!! Now I really wanna know what the context was for Didion using that line, I might look into it haha.

Love the song, I feel like it has the same energy as the cool girl monologue from gone girl. Also, I didn't know about that sleepover tradition. Fun!
